Sunday night, La Dispute returned to Portland for a headlining show as part of their spring tour. Energy buzzed from the first chord and fans squeezed further towards the front of the venue every set.
Chicago’s Slow Mass gives fans a taste of their quiet post-hardcore to open up the show. Mercedes Webb and Dave Collis lend their soft, yet powerful vocals to the bands striking instrumentals. The band’s debut full-length On Watch is out now. The band even took a moment to speak about Half Access, the non-profit tabling at the Portland show and allowed their founder Cassie Wilson to speak about their efforts.
Gouge Away’s in your face, hardcore punk rock then dominated the stage. Frontwoman Christina Michelle used every spare inch of space on stage to move around and the entire band was clearly having a fantastic time. Michelle, with her furious screams, addresses heavy topics and self-reflection and the band tackles a diverse sound that separates themselves from other bands in the genre.
With La Dispute on stage, passion is an understatement. I have never seen them put on a bad show and this was no different. The band’s post-hardcore features their signiture striking lyrics, pounding beats, and melodic spoken word. Frontman Jordan Dreyer interacted with the crowd from the very first song, standing on the barrier as fans screamed lyrics back to him.
