Down to their Bones: Rainbow Kitten Surprise at Edgefield (Gallery + Show Review)

If there is one word to describe a Rainbow Kitten Surprise show, it's electric. The North Carolina-born indie rock band stopped by McMenamin's Edgefield for the second night of their North American summer tour in support of their latest album, bones.
The sold-out crowd sprawled across the lawn as the sky held onto the last bit of sunshine, and Spacey Jane opened with a burst of energy that primed the crowd perfectly. The band's catchy hooks and raw excitement set the tone with fans on their feet before Rainbow Kitten Surprise even took the stage.
When RKS came on, it was clear this tour was a celebration of everything the band has built in their career spanning more than a decade. New tracks from bones, their most collaborative record yet, folded seamlessly alongside longtime favorites for a dynamic set. As a whole, I think bones leans back into the sound of the band's earlier releases, so the night was filled with plenty of incredible vocals and groovy instrumentals.
Frontwoman Ela Melo commanded the stage all night long with a magnetism and passion that can't be faked, on top of vocals that rival any of their studio recordings. For a few songs, the full band gathered around a single center mic for an acoustic break, stripping the songs back to their bones (fittingly) and letting the harmonies shine. Melo hopped around the stage in constant interactions with the rest of the bandmates, and the crowd matched the energy by singing every word and dancing together as if nobody was watching.
