On Thursday, February 6, the Keller Auditorium dimmed, and the crowd hushed as Sierra Spirit took the stage as the opening act for singer-songwriter David Gray.

Sierra Spirit is the project of Native American artist Sierra Spirit Kihega. She pulls inspiration from her Otoe-Missouria and Keetoowah Cherokee heritage to bring powerful and vulnerable storytelling to her lyrics, paired with a blend of guitar-driven indie pop. Her set featured the entirety of her debut EP coin toss, her brand new single "American Pie," and a stunning cover of Radiohead's "Creep."

Bathed in soft purple lighting with a simple stage setup, Sierra’s presence was unassuming yet magnetic. With just one guitarist by her side, her haunting, beautiful, and tender vocals made the grand auditorium feel like an intimate gathering.

While many had come for the headliner, the audience was drawn in by her authentic, quiet intensity, which rang through the final note of her set. She clearly set the tone for the evening with a performance delivered with honesty, heart, and sheer talent. Fans of Phoebe Bridgers, Ethel Cain, Julien Baker, and The Japanese House will want to keep an eye out for Sierra Spirit; this performance solidified that she is just getting started.
