At Aladdin Theater, Jonah Kagen delivered a performance that felt far more intimate than the sold-out room might suggest. With dim lighting casting a warm, living-room glow across the theater, the crowd settled into a quiet attentiveness that perfectly matched Kagen’s blend of Americana and folk-rock.

Opening the night, the stunning voice of Anna Graves carried effortlessly through the space. With the disco ball glittering overhead, she warmed up the audience with a sense of comfort that lingered long after her set ended.

There was no dramatic entrance as the lights dimmed for the night's headliner, just Jonah Kagen stepping into the soft glow of Aladdin Theater, letting the music speak first.

Touring in support of his fall 2025 release, Sunflowers and Leather, Kagen leaned heavily into new material. The newer songs showcased a slightly more country-leaning direction, though still grounded in the thoughtful lyricism and textured instrumentation that define his sound. For early fans, the highlights came when he reached back for tracks like “God Needs the Devil” and “The Roads.”

Kagen and his backing band moved seamlessly between stripped-down moments and fuller, more dynamic arrangements, never losing the emotional core of the songs. No matter the track, his honest and quietly powerful songwriting remains the anchor. Between songs, Kagen’s charm came through in easy anecdotes about his time in Portland, adding to the night’s close-knit feel.

Watching his growth over the past couple of years, it’s clear he’s on the cusp of something bigger. The next time he passes through town, I can't imagine we will be seeing him play a room this size again.
