Last week, indie-pop singer-songwriter Blake Rose captivated the crowd with his opening set at the Crystal Ballroom. Following the release of his debut EP this fall, A World Gone By, the Australia-born artist set out across North America in support of Noah Kahan on his I Was/I Am tour, and I knew I couldn't miss his performance at the Portland show.
At over 2.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify and one track, "Lost," currently nearing 64 million streams, it's safe to say the Rose has made quite the name for himself in the alternative pop world and is headed for something big. With his guitar-driven melodies and insanely catchy lyrics that draw you right into his storytelling, songs like "Casanova,” “Rollerblades," and “Ordinary People" will have you hooked from the very first line.
And not surprisingly, his live performance was just as phenomenal. His infectious energy left me feeling like I was at a summer house party rather than a cold and rainy winter day, and his vocals shined just as bright as they do on the recorded versions. Between trying to play matchmaker with the audience and running up and down the center aisle during one song, Rose's set absolutely flew by and left the whole crowd wanting more.
