Following several canceled and rescheduled shows due to the pandemic, LP, the stage name of the accomplished singer and songwriter Laura Pergolizzi, finally took the stage for a sold-out show at Portland’s Roseland Theater to kick off the first date of their 2022 North American tour.
Though they have written songs for artists like Cher, Rihanna, the Backstreet Boys, and more,
LP has surely made their own mark with a dozen albums and three EPs under their belt.
The diverse crowd was buzzing and chanting LP before the house lights even lowered. The four-piece band, comprised of a keyboardist, guitarist, drummer, and bassist, took the stage before LP stole the attention in their cherry red jacket and signature wide brim hat.
Their set was a strong mix of old and new, with hits like 2017’s “Lost On You” and “One Last Time” from 2021’s Churches. The combination of rock anthems and pop hits showcased LP’s edginess and lyrical storytelling, all while their trusty ukulele was the star of the show.
“When We Touch,” “Goodbye,” and “Girls Go Wild” gave a soft start to the show, but the energy really kicked up as soon as “When We’re High” began. The audience went wild with a dance party in the middle of the crowd, and big smiles filled the room. I have never seen a crowd so excited for a harmonica than LP’s harmonica solo during “Strange,” and my jaw was on the floor for the iconic whistling of “Other People.” LP wrapped up the set with an encore of “Lost On You” and was met with an ecstatic crowd singing the lyrics alongside them.
All through the show, it felt like LP was serenading the crowd one track at a time. Their vocal range is astounding on recorded tracks, but the live performance blew me away. Even into the highest notes, it was so clean and controlled, unlike anything I’ve heard on a large stage like this.
LP was back in Portland for a second packed show three days later, but you can catch the rest of the North American tour running through May 22 before they take off on a world tour this summer.
