As the sun set on a warm August Saturday night in Portland, the Wonder Ballroom lit up as eager concert-goers filed in to catch PVRIS on their summer headlining tour.
The show kicked off with a high-energy set from Royal & the Serpent featuring bandmates from Beauty School Dropout. Their set included viral hits like “Overwhelmed,” a cover of Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams,” and “girls.”
The venue buzzed as the lights went down and PVRIS, comprised of frontwoman and all-around badass Lynn Gunn, guitarist Brian MacDonald, and Denny Vega on drums, took the stage.
This was my third time seeing PVRIS, and their growth as a band has been phenomenal over the years. Their electronic rock sound is unlike any other, and PVRIS is a band that continues to effortlessly push the boundaries of genre, songwriting, and creative direction.
The set began with their latest single, “Monster,” which had the crowd screaming the lyrics from the very beginning. The setlist also featured plenty of songs from their 2020 release Use Me, a few from All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell, and some older fan favorites like “St. Patrick” and “You & I.”
I was blown away by not only the fun and welcoming stage demeanor (filled with banter about a mishap Gunn had in a Portland urgent care) but also the band’s overall performance growth. Gunn’s vocals were powerful and crisp as she ran around the stage guitar in hand, and the instrumentals rang perfectly throughout the tall venue.
After Portland, PVRIS wrapped up their tour with final stops in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Hollywood.
